Fast facts about living in a WVU Residence Hall.

  • After you pay your academic deposit to WVU, you will receive information on applying for on-campus housing. The housing contract and housing deposit can be completed on-line or a paper copy of the housing application can be mailed out upon request. For additional information, visit the WVU Housing home page.
  • Apply early to increase your chances of getting a space in your preferred hall and avoid being placed in temporary housing.
  • We begin making housing and roomate assignments in February and continue throughout the spring, on a first-come, first-served basis, according to when your contract is received for the fall term. Spring term assignments begin in November.
  • WVU owns nine residence halls and leases space in five additional halls on the downtown and Evansdale campuses. Each has its own unique characteristics.
  • Resident Faculty Leaders (RFLs) are affiliated with each hall and work with residence life staff to help students succeed. They plan social get-togethers, community service events, and trips. RFLs work with students to develop a spirit of community within each hall. They serve as advocates, educators, mentors, and student champions. For more information, visit http://housing.wvu.edu/residencehalls/rflprogram.htm.
  • The First-Year Experience is a collection of programs with a common goal helping you navigate your first year at WVU. We want you to succeed, and the First-Year Experience makes your journey easier by supporting you in all facets of your educational experience. First-Year Experience programs increase your interaction with faculty and other students and create a positive living and learning environment.

Are freshmen required to live on campus?

All single, first-year students are required to live in University housing. Transfer students with fewer than 29 transferable credit hours are also required to live on campus. Exceptions include students who live at home with their parents within a 50 mile radius of WVU, students who are married, who have children, or are 21 years of age or older. If you are planning on commuting, please complete the housing and dining application/contract and return it indicating that you are a commuter.

Which is the best residence hall?

Each hall has its own individual qualities and benefits. Your choice is based on your personal opinion. When questioned, most students say that the best residence hall is the one they lived in their freshmen year. Check out the residence halls on-line at the WVU Housing home page. All University owned rooms have cable, Internet hook-up, telephones and personal voice mail.

How do I apply to live on campus?

Information about applying for on-campus housing will be sent to you once you pay the academic deposit. You do not need to contact us; we will automatically send it to you. Carefully complete and return the contract, along with the housing deposit as soon as possible. Delaying your application might result in not receiving your preferred location. A portion of the housing deposit is refundable if you notify us in writing of your decision to not attend WVU by January 1 for the spring term and May 1 for the summer/fall terms or cancel online at www.sa.wvu.edu/cancel/.

Can I request a roommate or will WVU assign one for me?

We try to honor roommate requests on a space-available basis if we receive both roommates' housing applications/contracts and deposits within 30 days of each other and no later than February 1. We strongly encourage roommates to apply early to better your chance of being assigned to the same room in the hall you prefer. However, if you do not have a roommate in mind, WVU will pick one for you. Be sure to answer the questions on the application honestly so that we can make a good match for you. Due to space limitations, roommate requests cannot be honored for the spring terms.
