Are freshmen allowed to have cars on campus?

  • Availability of parking is extremely limited at West Virginia University. Presently, demand for parking space exceeds availability by 350%. We recommend that first year students not bring a car to West Virginia University, as many receive numerous citations which are $10.00 each. And, unpaid parking tickets will result in holds on your records at WVU.
  • There are ways of getting around Morgantown without a personal vehicle including the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT), the MountainLine bus system, and taxi cabs. Most of your classes are within walking distance and fees for the PRT are included in your tuition and fees. The MountainLine bus service is also free of charge for WVU students.
  • You may request to be put on a list for parking on the Evansdale Campus by calling the parking office at (304) 293-5502.

Do I need a permit to park?

  • Parking Permits are required for all campus parking areas between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Parking in these areas after 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, on weekends, and University observed holidays, is allowed without a permit except in posted areas which are permanently restricted.
  • Free parking without a permit is available only on the Evansdale Campus at the West Virginia University Coliseum, located off Monongahela Boulevard. Parking availability is determined by the requirements of the Athletic Department on a daily basis. Overnight parking at the Coliseum is not allowed without a permit.
  • Short-Term parking is available on the Downtown Campus at the Mountainlair Parking Garage located on Prospect Street, a lot in Sunnyside along University Avenue, and near the Evansdale Library, for an hourly rate. Again, demand far exceeds available space.
  • Visitor Permits for short term campus visits are available at the Parking Management Office, located at 3040 University Avenue, between the hours of 7:30 AM through 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

How can I get home if I live out of the area?

There are many ways for you to get home if you do not have a car.

    • WVU Motor Pool and Mountaineer Parents Club provide traveling students a lift to the Pittsburgh Airport. Round trip service to and from the Pittsburgh Airport usually costs $30; one way service is around $15. Consult the Mountaineer Parents Club bus schedule page for addtional details.
    • Some WVU Parents Clubs, such as those in New York and New Jersey, run a shuttle bus to their areas for breaks.
    • The Grey Line route, a partnership between the local Mountain Line transit and Greyhound, runs from Morgantown and Westover to Fairmont, Clarksburg, the Greyhound terminal in downtown Pittsburgh and to the Pittsburgh International Airport.
    • Airline reservations should be made through Cleveland, Ohio, to Morgantown, West Virginia.
