West Virginia Resident Scholarships

Awards available to West Virginia Residents through the WVU Undergraduate Scholarship Office include:


Foundation Scholars

Award Amount: Tuition and fees, room and board, personal expenses (as set by the WVU Financial Aid Office), and books for four undergraduate years, along with a $4,500 stipend for academic enhancement

The West Virginia University Foundation Scholarships were established to give maximum financial support to West Virginia residents who demonstrate the highest academic achievements and leadership potential. Five scholarships are awarded each year. These four-year (eight undergraduate semesters) scholarships provide tuition and fees, books, room and board, and personal expenses. In addition, Foundation Scholars qualify for a stipend of up to $3,500 in support for academic enhancement including travel, study abroad, internships, etc.

Criteria for Consideration: Minimum high school GPA of 3.8 and an ACT of 30 or SAT of 1340. Must have graduated from a West Virginia high school.

Students awarded a Presidential Scholarship will be sent an application for the Foundation and Bucklew Scholarships. Those selected from the application process as Bucklew Scholars will participate in interviews in the spring to be considered for the Foundation Scholarship. Recipients will be chosen by the Scholars Selection Committee.

How to Apply: Have all application materials, including your high school transcript and ACT/SAT scores, in at the WVU Admissions Office by Tuesday, January 19. Students eligible to apply for the Bucklew and Foundation Scholarships receive additional materials for completion around one week after receiving their acceptance letter.

Typically five students are awarded the Foundation Scholarship.

Neil S. Bucklew Scholars

Award Amount: A Presidential Scholarship, plus a book stipend, and $2,000 towards other costs for four undergraduate years.

Established in 1995, the Neil S. Bucklew Scholars are named for WVU's 20th president who created the WVU Scholars Program. Chosen by the Bucklew/Foundation Scholars Selection Committee, the Neil S. Bucklew Scholars will be comprised of 20 of the state's top high school seniors. In addition to their Presidential Scholarships, Bucklew Scholars also receive $2,000 per year to support other costs and a yearly book stipend, which is set by the Office of Financial Aid.

Criteria for Consideration: Minimum high school GPA of 3.80 and an ACT of 30 or SAT of 1340. Chosen by the Scholarship Selection Committee. Selected from students receiving a Presidential Scholarship who have graduated from a West Virginia high school or who have been home-schooled in West Virginia.

Presidential Scholars

Award Amount: $3,000 per year for four undergraduate years.

Criteria for Consideration: Minimum high school GPA of 3.80 and an ACT of 30 or SAT of 1340. Presidential Scholars will be chosen by the Scholars Selection Committee throughout the Fall and Spring. All Presidential Scholars will be sent an application for the Neil S. Bucklew Scholarships.

How to Apply: To be considered for Presidential Scholarships, students must complete the process for admission to WVU by February 1. All test scores (ACT/SAT) should also be submitted by this date.

Rhododendron Scholars

Award Amount: $2,500 per year for four undergraduate years.

Criteria for Consideration: Minimum high school GPA of 3.65 and an ACT of 28 or SAT of 1260. Presidential Scholars will be chosen by the Scholars Selection Committee throughout the Fall and Spring. All Presidential Scholars will be sent an application for the Neil S. Bucklew Scholarships.

How to Apply: Complete admissions process by February 1.
Applications received after this date may be considered if funding is available.

Mountaineer Scholars

Award Amount: $1,500 per year for four undergraduate years.

Criteria for Consideration: Minimum high school GPA of 3.60 and a 26 composite enhanced ACT score or an 1190 SAT score.

How to Apply: Complete admissions process by February 1.
Applications received after this date may be considered if funding is available.

Governor's Honors Academy Scholars

Students attending the West Virginia Governor's Honors Academy (WVGHA) are selected from among the best academic-achieving students throughout West Virginia. In recognition of the achievements of these distinguished students, WVU has established the WVU Governor's Honors Academy Scholarship.

Award Amount: $1,500 per year for four undergraduate years.

Criteria for Consideration: Must have attended the West Virginia Governor's Honors Academy (WVGHA).

How to Apply: Complete admissions process by February 1.
Applications received after this date may be considered if funding is available.

University Merit

One of the highest academic honors a high school student can achieve is selection as a National Merit Scholar. West Virginia University has dedicated scholarship funds to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to be awarded to West Virginia residents who select WVU as their first choice for undergraduate study.

Award Amount: Finalists with a 3.5 high school GPA or higher will receive a $6,000 per year University Merit Scholarship for up to 8 undergraduate semesters in addition to the National Merit Scholarship and a one-time stipend of $3,500 for study abroad. The Scholarship is paid in semester installments of $2,750. Finalists with less than the 3.5 high school GPA will be awarded a Presidential Scholarship and Semi-finalists will be awarded at minimum a Mountaineer Scholarship.

Criteria for Consideration: Awarded to students who select WVU as their first choice for undergraduate study with the National Merit Corporation

How to Apply: Take the PSAT/NMSQT test as a junior in high school.

Shenandoah Scholars

Award Amount: $1,000 for the first year and $500 for the second year.

Criteria for Consideration: Minimum high school GPA of 3.35 and an ACT score of 21 or a score of 990 on the SAT.

Achievement Award

Award Amount: $1,000 for the first year.

Criteria for Consideration: Minimum high school GPA of 3.00 and an ACT score of 21 or a score of 990 on the SAT.

G. Belmont Berry Scholars

Fifteen highly motivated high school seniors who demonstrate academic success and leadership qualities are awarded G. Belmont Berry Scholarships. These awards were establish through a gift from West Virginia University graduate George B. Berry in honor of his father. The scholarships are awarded to four students from each of three congressional districts, plus three at-large selections.

Award Amount: $1,200/yr. for four undergraduate years.

Criteria for Consideration: Semi-finalists chosen by WVU Undergraduate Scholarship Office from students who received an Achievement Award.

How to Apply: Complete admissions process by February 1.

Berry Honors Scholars

Each year a G. Belmont Berry Scholar of junior rank is chosen to receive the $5,000 Berry Honors Scholarship. To be considered, the student must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and must have completed 48 credit hours. The scholarship will be continued through the senior year providing the student maintains a 3.0 grade point average and completes a minimum of 24 credit hours in the junior year.

If you are awarded more than one scholarship through the WVU Undergraduate Scholarship Office, you will receive the one with the highest dollar value.
