GRADUATE ADMISSIONS INFORMATION
The fourteen colleges and schools at West Virginia University offer a variety of graduate programs leading to seventy-five master's, twenty-eight doctoral, and four first professional degrees with hundreds of specializations. Students may work full-time or part-time toward a graduate degree or enroll in classes for enrichment purposes. Some classes and programs are offered outside of Morgantown at locations throughout West Virginia.
Admission
For admission consideration as a degree-seeking graduate student at West Virginia University, the applicant must have: 1) a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, 2) met the criteria established by the degree program, and 3) been accepted by the department. This is a minimum University standard. Specific degree programs frequently set higher standards and also may set additional requirements, such as the submission of standardized test scores or letters of recommendation.
Prospective graduate students at West Virginia University are urged to initiate application for admission as early as possible. Follow these steps:
- Apply for admission using the Application for Graduate Admission. This form requires a $50.00 nonrefundable service fee.
- Have official transcripts sent directly to the WVU Office of Admissions and Records from the institution where you received your baccalaureate degree, as well as all institutions that you attended in the course of undergraduate or graduate study.
- Contact the school or college that offers your program to determine additional requirements of that program.
Non-Degree Students
Non-degree graduate students need to possess only a bachelor's degree and a 2.50 undergraduate grade-point average. Admission as a non-degree student does not guarantee admission to a degree program. The student must maintain a 2.5 GPA for the first 12 hours of WVU graduate coursework and maintain this average as long as enrolled.
To be eligible to enter a degree program, the student must maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA on all coursework taken since admission as a graduate student. A non-degree graduate student may accumulate unlimited graduate credit hours. If a student is later admitted to a degree program, the faculty of that program will decide what credit, if any, may be applied to the degree. Non-degree students may not apply more than 12 hours of previously earned credit toward a degree. These are the minimum admission requirements. Individual programs often establish higher standards. Please contact the appropriate college or school for complete information on the program of your choice.

Financial Assistance
To assist students in continuing their education at the graduate level, most graduate programs offer research or teaching assistantships. West Virginia University annually employs 1,300 students. These positions obligate the student to work between 12 and 20 hours, depending on the assigned duties.
All graduate assistants are also eligible to apply for a remission of tuition and most fees. The departments encourage the students to apply for these positions beginning in the Fall. Graduate assistantships are generally granted for a period of nine to 12 months.
W.E.B. DuBois Fellowships are also available for graduate and professional students who are black citizens of the United States. Arlen G. and Louise Stone Swiger Doctoral Fellowships are available for doctoral students. Information and guidance on loans for graduate students are available in the WVU Financial Aid Office, (304) 293-5242 or 1-800-344-WVU1.
