TRANSFER ADMISSIONS INFORMATION
At West Virginia University, we look forward to helping you through the transfer process. Each year, WVU admits approximately 1,400 transfer students. While the reasons for transferring are often similar, all students bring a unique transfer situation with them. Our experienced staff will confer with you individually to ensure a smooth transition to WVU.
You are considered a transfer student if you have completed any post-secondary (after high school) work at an accredited college/institution.
How to Apply
In order to apply for admission to WVU, you must complete the undergraduate application form. Make sure you complete all information, including your major and social security number. Mark the transfer box at the top of the application. Please remember to sign your application.
With your application, send the application fee and course descriptions for all courses you have completed and are currently enrolled in (this is not required for students transferring from other West Virginia institutions). Write your name on each page, and highlight each course taken. Please do not send complete catalogs.
Request official transcripts from all institutions you have attended. Please have the transcripts sent directly to WVU from the Registrar's Office of the institution(s) you have attended. We do not accept transcripts that have been issued to the student or facsimile (FAX) transcripts. Please note that in order to be considered for admission, you must have transcripts sent to us from all institutions you have attended, even if you did not do well at one of the institutions.
In addition, if you are transferring with less than 29 transferable credits, you must have an official high school transcript and ACT or SAT scores sent to us. Please ask your high school to mark the transcript: "FOR TRANSFER ADMISSION". Failure to do this may slow your admission. If you have been out of high school for 5 or more years, no test scores are required.
Finally, in order to process your application, we must have all of the above material by August 1 for fall admission and by December 1 for spring admission. We recommend you apply as early as possible.
Students who are not accepted to WVU as freshmen and decide to attend college elsewhere may be considered for admission after completing one year of academic work at another accredited institution.

How Courses Translate
Once we have your completed application and transcript(s), and have determined your eligibility for admission, we will do a preliminary evaluation of your transfer credits. Credits and grades for college-level courses completed at any institution in the West Virginia state system may be transferrable as long as WVU offers the subject area. For example, WVU offers history courses and will therefore accept all history courses from accredited institutions (slight variations may occur). Credits, not grades, are transferable from institutions outside the West Virginia state system for college-level courses in which you earn a grade of "D" or higher.
NOTE: D grades are accepted only for students entering WVU (Morgantown Campus) for the first time during or after Fall 1997.
Transfer credits from two-year community colleges and junior colleges are limited to a maximum of 72 hours of lower-division credit. Finally, all institutions must be accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, or by other regional accrediting associations accepted by West Virginia University.
We will translate your credit into WVU equivalents after you enroll. Your academic college or school will determine how, and/or whether your courses are applied toward completing your degree. In some cases, upper-division courses may not apply toward your degree.
