Non-Sufficient Funds Check Policy/Service Charge
Payments of tuition, fees, and other charges by check, draft, or order are subject to WVU’s Non-Sufficient Funds Check Policy. Policy is subject to change. A copy of the policy is available in the Office of Student Accounts (formerly Revenue and Loan Services). A service charge of $25 is collected on each check returned unpaid by the bank upon which it was drawn. Service charge on unpaid returned check(s) is subject to change in accordance with state law.
A returned check, draft, or order against a closed account or an account with insufficient funds (NSF) written to the university is in violation of civil law and, in certain situations (checks written over $200), criminal law. The university considers a returned item to be the same as nonpayment with the same consequences. If collection efforts made by the Assistant Controller in the Office of Student Accounts do not result in full reimbursement to WVU for the check and the NSF check fee(s), the manager will initiate action causing the student to be administratively withdrawn from the university. The withdrawal action will remove the student from the university class rosters, will cancel all student privileges, and will cause the student to be evicted from the residence halls (if applicable). If after thirty (30) days the returned item has not been collected upon, collections may be forwarded to a collection agency. Reinstatement of the above withdrawal process may occur only through an appeal process involving the Associate Provost for Student Affairs (through the Dean of Student Life) and the Director of Financial Affairs (through the Assistant Director, Office of Student Accounts). Upon the filing of an appeal, the administrative withdrawal and/or the eviction shall be stayed pending the outcome of the appeal. Appeals must be filed in writing with the Dean of Student Life within ten (10) calendar days of the date of receipt of the notice of administrative withdrawal. In addition, the Office of Student Accounts will place a hold on the student’s records at Admissions and Records. The hold will prevent processing of future registrations, requests for transcripts, and diploma as long as it remains in effect.
