Progress Guidelines
Students must be eligible to continue in their degree
program and must make satisfactory academic progress
towards obtaining a degree.
Academic progress is measured at the completion of
each Spring Semester and the new status is effective
with the following Fall Semester.
Requirements for Part-time and Full-time Undergraduate
& Graduate Students
(1) Successful completion of at least 70% of all
hours attempted. Hours attempted includes courses
with a grade of "W", "I" or "F" and all accepted transfer
hours.
(2) Minimum cumulative GPA:
Freshman (1-28 hours) .................. 1.6
Sophomore (29-58 hours) .............. 1.9
Junior/Senior (59 hours or more) .... 2.0
Graduate .....................................
2.25
Probation & Suspension
Students who fail to meet the above criteria will be
placed on one year probation but are eligible to receive
Title IV during this year. Students must however resolve
any deficiencies by the time academic progress is next
measured (at the end of the following Spring Semester).
Failure to correct any deficiencies during the probationary
year will result in suspension from financial aid programs
until such time as the requirements listed in Items
1 and 2 are met. During a period of suspension, students
are not eligible to receive Title IV aid.
Forgiveness
After at least 336 consecutive days of non-enrollment
at West Virginia University, a student may be re-instated
on probation for one academic year. At the end of that
year, students must meet the requirements in items 1
and 2.
Regaining Eligibility After a Period of Suspension
Students who meet the academic progress requirements
after a period of suspension will regain their eligibility
for financial aid.
Time Frame
Undergraduate financial aid applicants (including transfer
students) enrolled in a four year degree program have
a maximum of 180 credit hours attempted of undergraduate
work to complete their bachelor's degree requirements.
Undergraduate applicants enrolled in a designated five-year
degree program have an additional 32 credit hours to
complete their degree.
Students pursuing a second bachelor's degree have an
extension of 96 credit hours attempted beyond the maximum
180 credit hour limit to complete their second bachelor's
degree.
Graduate financial aid applicants enrolled in a Master's
degree program have a maximum of 54 credit hours attempted
to complete their degree requirements while those enrolled
in a Doctoral degree program have a maximum of 108 credit
hours attempted (including Master's degree work).
Professional students will be considered to be making
satisfactory progress as long as they are permitted
to continue in their degree program.
Appeal Procedures
Applicants denied financial aid due to failure to meet
academic progress requirements are entitled to appeal
the decision. Appeals must be made in writing within
10 days of the notification date and should detail any
extenuating circumstances that may have affected the
applicant's academic progress. Initial appeals should
be addressed to: Financial Aid Office Appeals Committee,
West Virginia University, PO Box 6004, Morgantown, WV
26506-6004. Students will be notified in writing of
the decision of the Financial Aid Office Appeals Committee
within 30 days of the date the appeal is received. Students

The levels of review in sequential order are:
